The quiet rise of one-handed mobile games

Screens have ballooned to the point where comfortably reaching the far corner with one thumb is a real stretch. The games that acknowledge this are quietly winning my loyalty.

A proper one-handed mode isn't just shrinking the UI. The good ones relocate controls to a reachable cluster and let you choose which side, since not everyone holds a phone the same way. Hollowreach Expedition's implementation is the gold standard for me.

Genre matters here. Adventure, casual, and puzzle games adapt to one hand beautifully. Something like Legends of Slots is practically designed for it, with everything a thumb needs within a small arc.

Even when there's no dedicated mode, the layout tells you a lot. If the core action buttons sit low and near one edge, the designers were thinking about real grips, not just screenshots.

I'd love to see this become standard across the board. Until then, I'll keep calling it out when a game gets it right, because comfort over a long session is worth more than most flashy features.
