Why some touch controls feel right and others don't

We've all installed a game that looked great and then quit twenty minutes later because the controls fought us the whole time. After testing dozens of layouts, I've started noticing the small decisions that separate good touch design from bad.

The biggest one is thumb reach. Good games put the most-used actions in the natural arc your thumb sweeps, usually the lower corners. Bad ones stick critical buttons up top where you have to shift your grip and risk dropping the phone.

Dead zones and button size are the next tell. Buttons that are too small or too close together lead to constant misfires. The best racers and action games give you generous hit areas, even if the visible button looks smaller.

One-handed modes are underrated. Hollowreach Expedition won me over partly because it lets you shrink everything to one side of the screen. More games should copy that, especially slower ones meant for commuting.

My advice: before you judge a game's controls, spend two minutes in the settings. Half the time the default layout is the problem, and a quick tweak turns a frustrating game into a comfortable one.
